Shortly before Christmas, Green councillors Chris Copeman and John Roach took the microphones at the Cheshire West and Chester council meeting, forwarding a motion to support Zane’s Law, which we’re pleased to say passed without opposition. Zane’s Law seeks to address the dangers of PCB contamination on flood-prone land, prompted by the tragic death of Zane Gbangbola.

A photo of the sludge from Commonside Tip filtering into a stream below. The stream eventually flows out into the Mersey Estuary

Zane’s Law seeks to address the dangers of PCB contamination on flood-prone land, prompted by the tragic death of Zane Gbangbola. Zane and his parents were caught in the Thames flooding of 2014 when contaminated floodwaters entered their home, causing cardiac arrests that killed Zane and paralysed Kye, Zane’s father. The objective of the law is to enhance regulations and ensure that communities are adequately informed and safeguarded from concealed hazards, such as PCB contamination.

The Commonside Tip, Helsby brownsites, and their PCB contamination have been a continual concern. This was noted by John Roach in the recent meeting due to the “heightened risk of flooding” due to climate change. The motion asked that governmental action be taken to protect the health of residents living near or on these flood prone areas.

Councillor Chris has been instrumental in advocating for this motion and the protection of the residents of Helsby and Alvanley. Recently, they’ve been in conversation with the Clean Rivers Trust to discuss how a cross-party PCB task force might go about decontaminating the land. To hear more about this, Chris was a guest on Radio Northwich with Mike Cooksley which you can relisten to on replay (beginning at about 5 minutes in).

The news on the motion passing in Cheshire West and Chester underscores the importance of protecting our communities from toxic chemical contamination and is a step in the right direction. The motion has also passed in other councils, along with being put forward to the House of Lords by The Green Party’s Baroness Bennett.

If you’d like to know more about Zane’s Law or want to get involved, head over to the website for more information. We will keep you up to date on any significant movement on the Commonside Tip and the progress of Zane’s Law.

Our manifesto explains our vision for life in Cheshire and the UK.  It is only two pages long (view it here) and in it we show that, although our focus as elected councillors would be on improving the lives of local people, the Green Party is not a single-issue group and we have a range of environmentally-sound national policies.

LOCAL CAMPAIGNERS WORK TO CLARIFY THE IMPACTS OF A HYDROGEN DOMESTIC HEATING TRIAL SET FOR WHITBY, ELLESMERE PORT

The gas distribution company Cadent are aiming to trial domestic heating using Hydrogen gas (rather than natural gas) in around 1900 homes in Whitby, near Ellesmere Port.   A final decision on the location of the trial, (Whitby or Redcar in the North East is expected later this year).

Local green campaigners from Whitby village, John Roach and Kate Grannell, have been working hard to gain clarity on how the trial will affect householders and John and Kate met with other concerned residents on 20th January.  Many share concerns yet to be fully addressed by Cadent and their consortium partners.   Queries include; what will be the level of disruption in my home and on my street; what will be the impact on house insurance premiums and mortgage provision?; will hydrogen prices go up after the 2 year fixed price period?; if we want to change back to natural gas, how will this be possible as it can’t be done on a house by house basis?

John said “I feel there has been a lack of community consultation, and decisions have been made without residents being properly informed or represented prior to the project getting underway.  I’ve had meetings with the MP and council representatives to raise awareness of our concerns and the council appears to have backed the project before properly exploring residents’ views.”

Caroline Lucas has called Suella Braverman’s Public Order Bill “a truly staggering attack on our right to protest… a blatant attack on political community – on the vital networks of people involved in keeping protest movements alive.”

Among other things, it would mean that people suspected of planning protests could be electronically tagged.

The Public Order Bill goes to the House of Lords this week. Our Green peers Jenny Jones and Natalie Bennett led the opposition to Priti Patel’s Policing Bill in the Lords and succeeded in getting many of its worst clauses thrown out.

You could sign this petition, for a start: I have the right to protest
